Getting the most
out of Ice-Crust Ice-Crust
is very easy to use: simply spread a thin and even layer
over the ice surface. This is really all you need to
know, but feel free to read the following. |
| Spread it thinly! |
Remember that Ice-Crust goes a long way
and is to be sprinkled sparingly. One litre of Ice-Crust
is usually enough to cover at least 40 m2/450 sq. ft.
of ice, and a little less of hard packed snow. Areas
with a lot of foot traffic may need a little more Ice-Crust
– try it and see. Keep in mind that too much Ice-Crust
will actually reduce its effect on ice. |
| Use the right tool |
If you buy Ice-Crust in our 1 litre container,
you already have the right tool. The container is convenient
for entrance areas, walkways, and verandas. For larger
areas you should consider one of our recommended broadcast
spreaders. |
| The 1 litre container |
Remove the cardboard from under the twist
cover. Hold the container close to the ground and spread
a thin and even layer over the ice surface, swinging
the jar from side to side. You should be able to cover
15—20 m2/160—220 sq.ft. per minute. Avoid
using Ice-Crust in a strong wind. |
| Broadcast spreaders
|
We have tested different spreaders and
chosen two models that we find suitable for use with
Ice-Crust. Set the regulator to 0 and fill the container
with Ice-Crust from a 10-litre bucket or a 40-litre
bag. Then move the lever to a low number as you start
walking at a relaxed pace. On black ice, it is usually
right if you se a brownish shade when you look back.
Experiment a little, and you will soon find the right
combination of pace and regulator setting. Set the lever
back to 0 when you stop walking. If possible the trolley
should be kept indoors, as warmer Ice-Crust will adhere
more effectively to the ice surface. |
| How to make the sandpaper
effect |
You can take advantage of Ice-Crust’s
absorbing quality to produce what we like to call “the
sandpaper effect”, providing the temperature is
below 0 ºC. Spread Ice-Crust a little richer than usual
over the ice surface and then spray it with lukewarm
water from a flower sprayer until the Ice-Crust absorbs
the water and gets dark. After 5—10 sec. the Ice-Crust
freezes onto the ice and forms a sandpaper-like surface.
On larger surfaces, you can let the afternoon sun take
care of the moistening, and leave the rest to the night
frost. |
| So, what when spring
comes? |
In springtime, Ice-Crust usually disappears
with the first rain showers. You can sweep any unlikely
residue of Ice-Crust onto the lawn or into the drain.
Ice-Crust is not harmful to your flowers or grass, or
to your municipal drainage system. It will act as a
soil conditioner on any groundcover. |
